I’ve always been interested in the “idea” of a place, and the associations or relationships people attach to it. I have a new idea for a series of paintings, which I’ll fully flesh out in a subsequent post, but for now I need something: You.

This past Saturday I had the pleasure of teaching a workshop at the Children’s Museum of Manhattan, about landscape painting and using gouache to a class of children aged 5 to 11. After thinking about a place they’ve been or using one of my photographs for inspiration, they set to work. Here are some of their paintings:

A painting from mid 2011 found as I was cleaning up my studio, and one of the last ones to include anonymous figures before I departed from this series. I’d like to start a new series incorporating figures again, but we’ll see what happens. The colors of the sky are a lot more vibrant and interesting in the actual painting and incorporates a greenish palette, a reminder that I need to not get trapped into using the same palette all the time.
